Why Pilates became my passion…

We have just completed the very first week of class at Studio 759 and this is the first official “Happy Friday” email…so surreal. I have been nonstop planning, wondering, stressing, worrying, hoping, and PRAYING. If you are new to my emails, I like to send a little newsletter every Friday with little bits of info, inspo, and convo. Today I thought I would give you a summary of how Pilates came to me so you can better understand my reason for teaching. In 2013, I took my first Pilates class as a Freshman at Auburn. It was a Mat Pilates class and I remember thinking ten minutes into the 55-minute class…this is for me. Afterwards I felt AMAZING. It was like my body was finally given the opportunity to move in a way it had been craving my entire life. So, I went back again, and again, and again. It is important to include that I was not in a good place mentally or physically during this time (another story for another day). But Mat Pilates gave me a feeling of security. It was the idea of emptying my mind of everything but my body and my mat. There was something grounding and powerful about being able to work your muscles and your mind without any equipment at all. I learned how to breathe correctly and how to truly be aware of my body – which I think ultimately saved my life. I was obsessed. I caught myself researching the “why” behind Pilates exercises, modifications, and how they could help different situations. Thus, led to the desire to become an instructor. I got a general certification and taught Pilates at the Rec Center until I graduated in 2016. Teaching brought my confidence back. In 2017 I decided to go through a 500-hour Comprehensive training program, Principled Pilates. I learned to teach on other Pilates apparatus such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Arc. I developed a new and unique perspective on Pilates, Yoga, and all forms of mind body connection. Also, in 2017 I started teaching at Absolute Fitness. I entertained the idea of other jobs outside of the fitness world, but I kept getting pulled back to Pilates. The fabulous Janie Watkins became another vital mentor and friend through this journey. The more I taught, the more I started getting the feeling of wanting more. The idea of Studio 759 was born. I developed a passion and a vision for what I knew it had to be. My husband Cole has ridden out this entire journey with me. So, when the time came, he pushed me, helped me, and together we made it happen. My dream is for the studio is to grow. Not just for Pilates and Yoga, but as a Whole-Body Health Center. I want it to be a place that anyone, any age, any fitness level can come to. Whether it is to clock in a sweaty workout and leave; or just to come, stretch, talk, and maybe have a cup of coffee. Can’t wait to see you at your next session! -Jennie
